Sun Valley Music Festival Salutes Pandemic Heroes Tonight

STORY AND PHOTO BY KAREN BOSSICK

The Sun Valley Music Festival orchestra will salute frontline heroes tonight when it takes the stage at 6:30 in the Sun Valley Pavilion.

But the festival is keeping the musical menu a secret. So that begs the question: What pieces would you pick to salute the heroes?

An obvious one for health care workers might be The Beatles’ “I Wanna Hold Your Hand.” After all, the inability to do that was one of the common laments doctors and nurses had when it came to treating COVID patients.

Keith’s “98.6” might be a good one since they were trying to keep the fever down. And, of course, there’s always “Fever” and “Achy Breaky Heart.”

The orchestra could salute grocery store workers with a medley of commercial jingles. Or, “Shimmy Shimmy cocoa puffs.” (Whoops! We’re told The Imperials song is actually titled “Shimmy Shimmy Ko-Ko Bop.”)

And nothing could be more fitting for delivery people than “The William Tell Overture,” aka “Theme from the Lone Ranger.” Didn’t that song rise to the occasion every time that delivery truck rounded the corner?!

Even if the orchestra doesn’t play your favorite hero song, you can post your frontline hero photos on Facebook or Instagram with #MyFrontlineHero. Or email them to info@svmusicfestival.org to have your favorite heroes recognized on the big screen before tonight’s performance.

The rest of the week:

  • Wednesday, Aug. 4--Violinist Joshua Bell who performed with the former Sun Valley Summer Symphony a couple times, will headline the Gala Concert. The fundraising concert is the only concert out of the three-week season that costs money, as it raises funds to pay for the remainder of the concerts. Purchase tickets at https://www.tix.com/ticket-sales/svmusicfestival/3977/event/1228545 Or, call 208-622-5607.

Thursday, Aug. 5—Mozart’s Concerto in A Major for guest clarinet player Jason Shafer and Orchestra will leave you humming. Also, Brahms’ “St. Antony Variations” and Mazzoli’s “These Worlds in Us.”

  • Friday, Aug. 6—Music Institute Summer Student Concerts. Afternoon concert at 3 p.m. features Prelude String Orchestra, Prelude Choir and Concert Choir. Evening Concert at 6:30 p.m. Features Chamber Singers, Advanced Chamber Orchestra and Sun Valley Youth Orchestra.
  • Saturday—Soprano Julia Bullock will sing Jessie Montgomery’s “Five Freedom Songs,” which was co-commissioned by the Sun Valley Music Festival and other orchestras. Bullock will also sing Aaron Copland’s “Lincoln Portrait.”
