Who would have known that raising chickens in 40-below temperatures could be fodder for a novel?!
Jackie Polzin, a graduate of the Boise State MFA program, was able to do just that with her new novel “Brood.”
Polzin has penned an insightful meditation on life and longing through the eyes of a narrator who heroically tries to keep her four chickens alive through seemingly endless challenges, including predators, bad luck, the uncertainty of a future that may not look like the one she always imagined, a brutal winter and a sweltering summer, which brings a surprise tornado.
Polzin, who lives in St. Paul, Minn., will discuss the wisdom, sorrow and joy that her novel contains during a Livestream at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 13. She will be joined in conversation by Martha Williams, the library’s program’s and education manager.
