Editor’s Note: The Wood River Valley’s poet-on-skis and at-the-end-of-a-fishing rod Ed Northen must’ve been smitten by Cupid this year as he was inspired to write a poem.
BY ED NORTHEN
Winged Cupid Flies
with his golden bow
and quiver
filled with arrows
dipped in potions
of Eros
sent out to play
by Venus
while enraptured Mercury
waits in her perfumed bed.
Enchantment is always dangerous
especially for a playful youth
who Is naïve,
the unintended consequence
of divine alchemy
not deliberated
besides Zeus
and the other gods
meddle in mortal’s lives.
It’s entertaining
to watch them
play out their odyssey’s
of tragedy
and love
to test their rectitude.
Can Amor mature
from consuming
to sacrificial?
For bored Cupid
the outcome is inconsequential
it’s only a game
