More than 50 enthusiastic youngsters cheered 100 Men Who Care this past week as beneficiaries of the men’s latest gift.
But it was two little girls who came up to 100 Men Founder Marty Lyon afterwards that touched his heart.
“They took my hand and thanked me personally. They were so sweet,” he said.
100 Men Who Care voted to give $11,300 in donations this past week to the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation’s Cooper-Tache Fund to benefit the Rota-Rippers.
Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation offers afterschool learn to ski and ride alpine programming for 5- to 11-year-olds at the Rotarun Ski Area west of Hailey. It also offers instruction at Quigley Canyon cross-country trail system east of Hailey.
The programs are supported by the Cooper-Tache First Tracks Fund, started by Sun Valley Olympic medalist Christin Cooper and her husband, former U.S. Ski Team racer Mark Tache. The mission: To provide winter snow sports access to children who would not otherwise be able to participate due to financial barriers.
SVSEF coaches provide professional coaching and instruction and the children are exposed to the enjoyment of a healthy outdoor afterschool activity that teaches them life skills, such as setting goals and team dynamics, while having fun.
“The SVSEF’s philosophy is to build strong minds, strong bodies and strong futures,” said Cynthia Knight, director of development for the SVSEF. “These South Valley programs are in keeping with this philosophy and are a priceless experience for each child, while helping to build a strong community.
“The donation by the 100 Men Who Care will have a direct impact on the ability of the Cooper-Tache First Tracks Fund to touch the lives of so many deserving children and build a stronger and healthier community for all,” she added.
Since its first quarterly meeting in February 2013, 100 Men who Care has given more than a fifth of a million dollars. Or, $203,300, if you’re counting. Each man who participates contributes $100 to a pool that is then given to a nonprofit of the men’s choosing.
The next meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 7, at Ketchum’s Community Library.
