Mezzo-soprano singer Anna Majernikova and pianist Ashley Mekeel are performing a Palm Sunday recital this afternoon with special guest artist—soprano Sara Steskal—from Boise.
The trio, who call themselves “The Divine Intervention,” will perform Stabat Mater by Italian Baroque composer, violinist and organist Giovanni Battista Pergolesi.
The free concert will be held at 4 p.m. today—Sunday, March 24—at St. Charles Catholic Church in Hailey.
Pergolesi composed his “Stabat Mater” in the final weeks of his life as he lay dying at 26 from tuberculosis in a Franciscan monastery in Pozzoli.
It became one of his most celebrated sacred works and one of the most important works of sacred music of all time. He composed it specifically for Palm Sunday, which marks the beginning of Holy Week as Jesus makes his journey towards his sacrificial death and resurrection.
