The Sun Valley Museum of Art will show its final evening of Oscar shorts on Thursday, March 7.

One showing will start at 4 p.m. at the Magic Lantern Cinemas in Ketchum; the other, at 7 p.m.

This week’s selections focus on documentary shorts that are up for a statuette on Sunday, March 10.

The documentaries revolving around aging, friendship, economic inequality, Taiwanese independence and book bans:

Nǎi Nai and Wài Pó – Sean Wang and Sam Davis, 17 min., USA (in Mandarin). Filmmaker Sean Wang started filming his 86-year-old paternal grandmother and 96-ear-old maternal grandmother when he moved in with them during the height of COVID. The charming 17-minute doc captures their everyday lives in Fremont, Calif., depicting the joy they find in their twilight years.

The Barber of Little Rock – John Hoffman and Christine Turner, 35 min., USA (in English). This depicts one man’s fight to close the racial wealth gap in Little Rock, Ark.,  by forming an alternative to banking he calls The People Trust.

Island In Between – S. Leo Chiang and Jean Tsien, 20 min., Taiwan (in English/Mandarin). This offers and man’s reflection on Taiwan’s history and identity from the islands of Kinmen near mainland China.

The ABC’s of Book Banning – Sheila Nevins and Trish Adlesic, 27 min., USA (in English). Those who have been impacted most by book banning in school districts—the kids—offer profound insights.

The Last Repair Shop – Ben Proudfoot and Kris Bowers, 39 min., USA (in English). A few devoted craftspeople keep more than 80,000 student instruments repaired in Los Angeles.
