Sun Valley Opens Season with Snow, Flames and More

Two days before its Thanksgiving opener, a few circles of manmade snow could be seen dotting Ridge on Baldy. Then it started snowing. It snowed 16 inches on Thanksgiving Eve and another four inches early Thanksgiving Day.

By Thanksgiving morning, Sun Valley Resort had been transformed into a winter wonderland that looked more like Christmas than Thanksgiving. And hundreds of skiers gobbled up the fresh powder as the Lookout Express ferried them up over Holiday, whose brush was all but covered by the fresh snow. Even more snow fell as they journeyed above Blue Grouse where large mounds of manmade snow were blanketed in soft powdery snow from heaven, and past Ridge, which by then was a ribbon of white.

Jumpers and sliders bounced over a terrain park of bumps, pipes and rails strung along Lower College. And the snow enabled Blaine County Recreation District groomers to pack the Harriman Trail and trails in Quigley Canyon, where Hailey homeowners had shoveled two feet of snow and donned snowshoes to walk the dog.

Eye on Sun Valley’s Karen Bossick introduces you to some of the excitement surrounding the opening of the 84th winter season at Sun Valley Resort.
