Hemingway Writer-in-Residence John Maclean will discuss a new essay he’s writing celebrating the centennial of Ernest Hemingway’s short story “Big Two-Hearted River” during a free presentation at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, at Ketchum’s Community Library.

The essay traces the importance of the Hemingway short story in his own life and that of his late father Norman Maclean, who wrote “A River Runs Through It.”

Hemingway’s short story published in 1925 revolves around the autobiographical character Nick Adams as it explores the destructive qualities of war and the regenerative powers of nature, in this case presented through the details of a fishing trip.

Maclean, who spent 30 years at the Chicago Tribune, will include the essay in a book of essays to be published in 2023 by the University Press of Kentucky.

“When John was preparing for his first event with us last February, he knew of Ketchum’s Hemingway connection and dove back into some of his favorite Hemingway works,” said Martha Williams, the Library’s director of programs and education. “He reread ‘Big Two-Hearted River,’ which follows the character Nick Adams as he returns home from war seeking solace in nature. The story’s metaphors have been debated for nearly a hundred years.

“John will share with us what he’s learned from examining the language of the story, its original drafts housed at the JFK Library in Boston, Hemingway’s letters, and Michigan’s Fox River that was the inspiration for the story’s setting.”

Maclean has written six books, most recently “Home Waters: A Chronicle of Family and a River,” which he discussed before a Community Library audience. Other books include “Fire on the Mountain,” “Fire and Ashes,” The Thirtymile Fire,” “The Esperanza Fire” and “River of Fire.”

A book signing will follow the event, courtesy of Chapter One Books.
