Want to kick back and relax after the busy Christmas holidays?

Check out some of the free musical vibes around the valley.

Carl Massaro, who divides his time between Sun Valley and Nashville, will perform a free show from 6 to 9 p.m. tonight—Friday, Dec. 27—at Ketchum’s Limelight Hotel.

Massaro, who played for years as part of the band Cadillac Carl and the Road Rangers, plays a lot of country, but he’s also been known to serve up tunes in the vein of artists like Ry Cooder and Joe Walsh, as well as Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan and The Band.

“My mix is what they are calling Roots Music now,” he said. “I started playing up here in the 1970s and was picked up by the road manager of Waylon Jennings, who took me to Nashville. I have gotten to play with some great pickers and writers, and I spend seven months a year there now in my little garage/office on Music Row.”

Massaro will be joined tonight by JT Phillips, who was born in the Wood River Valley but now lives and plays in the Seattle grunge scene.

“He is a great guitar player and we are both looking forward to it. We play music you can dance to. Dale Bates and his dancers often come to hear us and they are so talented,” Massaro said.

  • The Limelight Hotel is rolling out plenty of free vibes for its lounge act.

On Saturday Aaron Golay will perform, followed by Kevin Ware on Sunday, Mia Edsall on Monday and The New York Connection for the big New Year’s Eve apres ski scene.

  • Sun Valley Resort, meanwhile, is serving up free vibes from Dr. Tom Archie and his Doghaus band from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. today—Friday, Dec. 27--at River Run Lodge. Bread & Circus will play from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, at the River Run Lodge. The Pisten Bullys will perform the afternoon show on Sunday, Dec. 29, and Powder Steering on Monday.
  • Larry Harshbarger will tickle the ivories from 6 to 9 tonight through Sunday at the Ram Restaurant. Brooks Hartell will take over piano duties at the Ram on Monday, with Harshbarger returning on Tuesday. And Joe Fos and Brad Hershey will perform live jazz piano and bass at the Duchin Lounge from 7 to 10 p.m. New Year’s Eve.
  • Can’t get “Let It Snow, Let It Snow Let It Snow” out of your brain? You don’t have to. The Sun Valley Carolers are gathering around the firepit at the Sun Valley Inn lawn tonight and Saturday at 7:05 p.m. to offer up some Christmas carols in addition to their rounds of Sun Valley Village and Village restaurants.
  • And, if you still have some ummmph left in your legs after a hard day on the slopes, don your acid-washed jeans, neon jackets and shoulder pads to hit Sun Valley’s outdoor Ice Rink for ‘80s on Ice. That’s right the rink will present the best music from that era from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28.
