Library patrons are getting younger and younger!

Babies up to 18 months and their caregivers are invited to Baby Time, a free drop-in program that will be offered from noon to 12:30 p.m. each Monday at the Hailey Public Library beginning Oct. 7.

Older siblings are welcome, as well, although the focus will be on the infants.

Children’s Librarian Lea Colvill will incorporate nursery rhymes, such as “The Itsy Bitsy Spider,” tickling and other gestures.

“Since language is in itself musical, singing helps babies learn language skills, and the gestures teach motor skills,” said Colvill.

Colvill will use a life-sized doll named Paige that was specifically made for the program to show parents the gestures and keep babies engaged.

“Baby Time is designed to help build parents’ skills and confidence in interacting with their child in predictable, fun and loving ways,” she said. “It will also help parents make new friends.”

A nurse from the South-Central Public Health District will join Colvill on the third Monday of each month to answer questions about the development of infants. A Spanish-speaking nurse from the District will be present every other month.

Colvill, who has a master’s degree in curriculum development from the University of Montana, learned about the program at a state library conference on early childhood literacy. In larger cities, she said, the program can cost $90.

Ironically, the program starts up just as Company of Fools stages “Cry It Out,” a play looking at the angst new parents go through as they try to chart a course that will ensure their infants best course in life.

“It should be a fun but very important weekly program for babies and parents,” said Kristin Fletcher, the library’s programs and outreach specialist.
