The Sun Valley Center for the Arts will host a free evening tour of its new visual arts exhibition, “Unraveling: Reimagining Colonization in the Americas,” at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 21.
The BIG IDEA project reexamines the colonial history of the Americas, offering alternative perspectives and stories based on both fact and fiction.
The artists in the exhibition work in a wide range of mediums, including printmaking, drawing, fiber, video and photography, said Dr. Courtney Gilbert, curator of visual arts.
“Together, through works that are inventive, imaginative and sometimes darkly funny, they suggest narratives that are left out of most history books,” she added.
For instance, Marie Watt, a member of the Seneca Nation, incorporates the woolen blanket in her projects to build narratives around Native American resistance to and persistence in the face of a colonizing European culture.
