“Faces Places,” a 2018 Oscar-nominated film that was supposed to be shown last week, will be shown instead on Thursday.

The film will be shown at 4:30 and 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, at the Magic Lantern Cinemas in Ketchum.

The film distribution company had a mix-up and didn’t send the film in time for last week’s screening, said Kristine Bretall, director of Performing Arts at the Sun Valley Center for the Arts.

The film is part of the Sun Valley Center for the Arts 2018-2019 Film Series.

The enchanting documentary/road movie was created by 89-year-old Agnes Varda, one of the leading figures of the French New Wave cinema era, and acclaimed 33-year-old French photographer, muralist and graffiti artist JR.

Though more than a half century apart in age, the two share a lifelong passion for images and how they are created, displayed and shared.

They traveled around the villages of France, meeting locals, learning their stories and producing epic-size portraits of them. Then they displayed the photos on houses, barns, storefronts and trains.

JR is a self-styled urban activist who creates public art installations that are seen online and on the street. In 2011 he won the TED prize, using the $100,000 award to start the Inside Out Project, which allowed thousands of people around the world to speak to their communities through portraits such as those depicted in the film pasted in public spaces.

“In the street we reach people who never go to museums,” he says.

Varda, now 90, is the oldest person to be nominated or an Oscar in a major category.

“The film is a poignant reminder that, despite technology and the speed of our modern world, stories and people matter and when we pause to see the people in a landscape, we are reminded of our human connection,” said Bretall.
