STORY AND PHOTOS BY KAREN BOSSICK

Paulette Jordan made the New York Times a few days ago with a story titled “Idaho Isn’t Turning Blue, but One Democrat is Turning Heads.” The story featured a couple photographs of Jordan in Ketchum.

Her opponent Lt. Gov. Brad Little, meanwhile, has stayed out of the spotlight through much of this year’s campaign, apparently trusting that voters remember he’s been part of Idaho government since 2001 when then-Gov. Dirk Kempthorne appointed him to a state Senate seat that had been vacated.

Wood River Valley voters can choose between Jordan, who was born into two lines of tribal chiefs, and  Little, whose Scottish grandfather grew his Idaho sheep ranch into one of the biggest in the country, when they go to the polls today.

And, no matter what, they will elect the first female lieutenant governor in the state’s history. Kristin Collum is an Army veteran who exercised fiscal responsibility with her campaign funds by carrying a cooler of food and a sleeping bag and tent in the trunk as she visited each of Idaho’s 44 counties. And Janice McGeachin and her family own an Irish pub in Idaho Falls.

Then, of course, there are a slew of local candidates from which to choose. And there are two propositions on the ballot, including Proposition 2—a bill that supporters say would provide Medicaid for about 62,000 Idahoans who don’t make enough money to qualify for other insurance.

The polls are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Voters should show valid photo identification or be prepared to sign an affidavit swearing to their identity. Valid forms of ID include a driver’s license, concealed-weapons license, U.S. passport or federal photo ID, tribal photo id and a current photo ID issued by an Idaho high school or post-secondary education institution
