Ice Dance International is back in Sun Valley—this time to film a new piece for PBS created by dance luminary Trey McIntyre.

The innovative ice dance troupe is staging its fourth annual Sun Valley residency Sept. 17 through 26 at the outdoor ice rink at Sun Valley Resort.

And local videographer Spencer Cordovano and Stellar Adventure Media will film and edit a second public television special featuring the new McIntyre piece on Sept. 24. The special will be distributed by American Public Television in April 2019.

Ice skating and dance fans are invited to attend a workshop performance of repertory featuring the new Trey McIntyre piece in costume at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, at the indoor rink at Sun Valley Resort. The evening will include works by Ice Dance International’s Artistic Director Douglas Webster, contemporary skating choreographer Benoit Richaud and ballet dance legend Edward Villella, as well.

Trey McIntyre, an award-winning choreographer whose pieces have been performed around the world, was the founder of the dance company Trey McIntyre Project (TMP) in Boise. A renowned photographer as well, he was commissioned by the U.S. Forest Service to create photographs to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act.

Tickets are $20, available at www.icedanceinternational.org or at the door.

Ice Dance International will take the show it premieres here on national tour after honing it in Sun Valley.

Ice Dance International is a professional performing arts company created by Webster with the help of former Olympic figure skater Dick Button and Villella. The idea: to transform the athletic artistry of skating into a show full of fun and serious ensemble pieces and pieces inspired by ballet moves.

Its board of directors includes Olympic champions Dorothy Hamill and Sarah Hughes, JoJo Starbuck, Olympic medalist Scott Allen and Canadian figure skating champion Linda Carbonetto Villella.

Ice Dance International’s first special, “The World of Ice Dance International-Part 1,” premiered on PBS-TV in April 2018 and has aired 262 times—92 of those in prime time. That special aired in eight of the top 10 markets in the United States, including Los Angeles, New York City and Chicago.

The show, which featured works by Villella and Webster and a segment about the joy of skating in Sun Valley, also aired locally via Idaho Public Television in April and June 2018.

“The World of Ice Dance International-Part 2” will also feature additional works created in Sun Valley by  Webster and Richaud that were filmed in Valley last September.

SKATE WITH ICE DANCE INTERNATIONAL AND CHECK OUT THE REHEARSALS

The public is invited to watch Ice Dance International’s rehearsals at Sun Valley Resort’s outdoor rink from 9 a.m. to noon and during late afternoons from Sept. 17 through 25.

Advanced skaters are also invited to take part in company edge classes free of charge at 9 a.m. each day during the residency.

Ice Dance International will stage its third annual skating program for youth and adults with special needs in collaboration with Higher Ground while here.

Ice dancers will skate with adults from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, and Friday, Sept., 21. They will skate with youngsters from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25.

Higher Ground’s Cara Barrett noted the ice dancers’ “maternal talent” in working with children with special needs: “Although it was a short program, we were able to observe some wonderful progress with each individual.”
