Bees are getting their moment not in the sunlight but in the spotlight this week as the Sun Valley Center for the Arts focuses on the winged pollinators via a panel discussion, film and more.

It kicks off tonight—Tuesday, April 24—with a free panel discussion titled “WHAT IS THE THREAT?” The free discussion will be held at 6:30 p.m. at The Center, Fifth and Washington streets in Ketchum.

Moderated by backyard beekeeper Steve Hobbs, the discussion will explore the impact bees and other pollinators have on our lives, the role they play in maintaining our food supply and how current agricultural practices affect their jobs as pollinators.

Panelists are Tom Harned, a commercial beekeeper from Hailey and owner of 5B Honey; Ross Winton, regional wildlife biologist with the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, and Sara Berman, owner of Squash Blossom Farm near Bellevue.

Though free, people are welcome to reserve a seat by visiting www.sunvalleycenter.org or by calling 208-726-9491.

On Thursday, April 26, The Center will show the film “QUEEN OF THE SUN: WHAT ARE THE BEES TELLING US?” at 7 p.m. at the Magic Lantern Cinemas in Ketchum.

The award-winning 2011 documentary was filmed by Taggart Siegel, who was born in the Sun Valley Lodge when it served as a hospital. He grew up in Sun Valley and will be coming from Portland, Ore., to attend the screening and field questions afterwards.

Siegel was inspired to become a filmmaker when Donald Spoto presented several lectures on Alfred Hitchcock’s films at the Sun Valley Opera House when he was 18.

His film, “Queen of the Sun,” takes viewers on a journey through the mysterious world of the beehive and the catastrophic disappearance of the bees that inhabit them. It proves uplifting as it interviews scientists and philosophers, such as Michael Pollan, author of “The Omnivore’s Dilemma;” Gunther Hauk, co-founder of Spikenard Farm, a biodynamic and organic honey bee sanctuary, and Vandana Shiva, a physicist whose foundation advocates for sustainable methods of agriculture.

Shiva appeared at Sun Valley’s Mountain Wellness Festival two years ago.

The film has won 11 international film festival awards. And film critic Roger Ebert called it “a remarkable documentary that’s also one of the most beautiful nature films I’ve ever seen.”

“Seeing images of commercial farming and learning about its impact on pollinators is profound,” said Kristine Bretall, director of performing arts for The Center. “While we all enjoy the benefits of affordable food, we may not be aware of the kinds of environmental devastation this farming approach has caused.”

Tickets are $10 for Center members and $12 for nonmembers, available at www.sunvalleycenter.org or by calling 208-726-9491.

The film will be preceded by a FREE TOUR of the visual arts exhibition associated with “Bees” at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 26, at The Center.

The exhibition features 10,000 bees cut out from seed-embedded paper, along with one Queen Bee, in an exhibition crated by Dr. Cameron Cartiere. It also includes a geometric installation made of beeswax hanging from the ceiling.

jasna guy has contributed a couple installations, including one that shows how pollen changes color throughout the season, while Boise-based artist Kirsten Furlong shares her “Imagined Pollinators.”

Additional tours will be offered on May 24 and June 14.

The BIG IDEA project “Bees” will run through June 22.
