STORY AND PHOTO BY KAREN BOSSICK

Sun Valley Resort was named the No. 2 Overall Ski Resort in North America in “SKI Magazine” 29th annual reader’s poll for the 2017-18 season.

The honor came on the heels of a powderiffic season that kept powder hounds grinning from ear to ear as 337 inches of snow—28 feet—piled up on Baldy and Dollar mountains.

“Tradition, ambiance, great customer service, efficient lifts, beautiful location, amazing grooming…there is, quite simply, no place like it,” offered the magazine.

The resort was named No. 1 for its lifts, No. 2 for its grooming, service and character, No. 3 for lodging, No. 4 for dining and après ski activities.

Sun Valley has held the No. 1 spot for lifts since 2014 and has consistently ranked in the top three for grooming over the past six years.

“We are pleased to be voted as one of the top resorts in North America,” said Tim Silva, the resort’s vice president and general manager. “We are committed to providing an outstanding guest experience, both on and off the mountain, and are thrilled with this recognition from our guests.”

The resort hopes to cement its reputation as having the best lifts in North America with its proposed Cold Springs Canyon Project, which will replace the resort’s oldest chairlift--Cold Springs No. 4--with a detachable quad.

The project will expand the skiable terrain by 380 acres, opening up some off-piste skiing below Seattle Ridge Lodge in an area called Turkey Bowl. It will provide some additional beginner terrain, as well.

Sun Valley’s ski patrol and instructors will offer a guided “Experience Cold Springs Canyon” this winter for advanced skiers yearning to check out the new terrain in the project area. The area includes open bowl and tree skiing and ridgeline traversing.

The project will also include improved snowmaking on Seattle Ridge and an improved Cold Springs mountain bike trail.

Sun Valley will also host the 2018 U.S. Alpine Championships March 19-26. The same event held at Sun Valley in 2016 electrified residents of Sun Valley, as well as visitors who came from all over for a week of amazing ski racing, dancing to live bands and a celebration of Sun Valley’s Olympians.

Oh, and did we mention Mikaela Shiffrin, who not only stellar race results but endeared herself to hundreds of youngsters who lined up to get her autograph on their helmets, thermos bottles, even tummies?

The resort is also busy at work this fall improving its lodging and food service as it renovates the historic Sun Valley Inn, The Ram restaurant, The Ram Bar and transforms the former Bald Mountain Pizza into a new restaurant called Village Station.

The Village Station will open in mid-December, providing a sports pub-type atmosphere. Twenty-five rooms of the Inn are being refurbished this fall in time for the holidays; the remaining 80 rooms will be remodeled in Fall 2018.

And, while access wasn’t one of the resort’s high points in the pool, accessibility to Sun Valley continues to improve. A nonstop flight from Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) will be added for the 2017-18 winter season, joining nonstop flights from Los Angeles, Seattle, Salt Lake City, Denver, Portland and Seattle.

WHO ELSE MADE THE LIST?

“SKI Magazine” readers named Deer Valley No. 1 this year. Whistler/Blackcomb, which has been ranked No. 1 three times of the last four years, was ranked No. 3; Snowmass, Colo., No. 4, and Telluride, Colo., No. 5. Vail was named No. 6; Jackson Hole, No. 7; Aspen Highlands, No. 8; Beaver Creek, No. 9, and Whitefish Mountain Resort in Montana, No. 10.

If you’re in the market for an Eastern ski resort, just head to Vermont. The Best in the East were Smuggler’ Notch in Vermont; Sugarbush, Vt.; Mount Snow, Vt.; Tremblant, Quebec, and Jay Peak. Vt.
