Anthony DiLorenzo had an unusual hobby as an 8-year-old growing up in Stoughton, Mass.

He transcribed the music from “Gilligan’s Island,” “Lost in Space” and other sitcoms. Then he played along with the shows on his trumpet.

It paid off.

DiLorenzo has composed more than 150 film trailers for such movies as “Toy Story,” “The Lost World,” “Forest Gump,” the “Harry Potter” movies and “The Lost World”—a career he happened onto in Utah in the early 1990s.

He’s written the music sports fans hear weekly on ABC’s College Football and ice skating, horse racing and other sports shows for ESPN.

And he’s composed a number of songs for the Sun Valley Summer Symphony, including “Poseidon,” which symphony fans will hear Monday night during the Brasstacular Concert featuring 12 trumpets.

Oh, and he won an Emmy along the way.

“I’m comfortable with a mix of classic and film music—I’m very comfortable with that palette,” said DiLorenzo, who’s currently working on an industrial musical movie.

“In college I was playing at the Tanglewood Institute and everyone was in their dorm producing music in their cubicles. One of the leaders banged on my cubicle and said, ‘What is that amazing music you’re making?’ I replied ‘When Tie Fighters Attack’—the theme from ‘Star Wars.’ He looked at me like he wanted to slug me. But, all I could say was, ‘Isn’t it incredible!?”

Asked to compose a song for Monday’s concert, DiLorenzo settled on “Poseidon, a musical tale that encompasses his love for mythology and storytelling.

The piece, he said is a fun journey that starts out with Poseidon taking a journey in a chariot through clashing waves and finally diving to the bottom of the ocean.

“It’s the complete opposite of our surroundings. Here, we’re surrounded by majestic mountains. Why not perform a peace celebrating majestic oceans!”

The most challenging part was finding a way to add richness to the piece since trumpets don’t really have a low end. DiLorenzo solved the problem by spicing up the piece with a couple timpani players.

DiLorenzo says it’s a composer’s dream come true to have 12 of the best trumpet players in the world performing his piece.

“Unfortunately, when you focus just on your piece you get sidetracked,” said DiLorenzo, who will be one of those trumpet players. “I’d love to be in the audience just being able to sit back and listen to it.”
