Ceramic artist Gerald Arrington will talk about his techniques for creating one-of-a-kind stoneware ceramics during a free lecture at 5 tonight at Boulder Mountain Clayworks.
The lecture, at 471 E. 10th St., is co-sponsored by the Sun Valley Center for the Arts. It will precede Arrington’s “Throw, Alter, Transform” ceramics workshop from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 9-10, at Boulder Mountain Clayworks.
Arrington, awarded Best in Ceramics at the 2016 Sun Valley Center Arts and Crafts Festival, begins his process by throwing clay on the wheel. He adds colored slips to create stratification while the piece is still on the wheel. Then, after creating several stones in various shapes and sizes, he refines his art into sculptures for table, home and garden.
Arrington spent 25 years in Idaho, drawing inspiration from the Wood River Valley, before establishing the Gerald Arrington Stoneware Ceramics in Sonoma County, Calif. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts while studying geology and his love of clay and fascination with rocks eventually merged, becoming the basis for his unique art forms.
His works will be on view at the 2017 Sun Valley Center Arts & Crafts Festival Friday through Sunday, Aug. 11-13, at Atkinsons’ Park in Ketchum.
