Little Black Dress Tries a New Way of Making Philanthropy Fun

The Little Black Dress Club is following the men’s lead.

The women’s philanthropic organization will try out the model set up by 100 Men Who Care at a get-together at 5:15 p.m. Monday, June 26, at Sawtooth Botanical Garden.

In the past, the organization charged $300 annual dues that went towards nonprofit organizations, which   members had screened and voted on.

Now, instead, the organization plans to meet three times a year, with attendees throwing $100 into the basket each time.

Members will nominate 501c3 organizations in the Wood River Valley at each meeting, speaking briefly about the cause they are championing. Then they’ll vote on which nominee they think could best use the pooled $100 checks that they are giving away that evening.

The women will conclude each meeting with pooled light bites and beverages.

“All of us seem to be busier than ever these days and we hope that this new format, inspired partially by Marty Lyon from 100 Men Who Care, will be met with great enthusiasm,” said Lynn Campion, who founded the organization.

Making time to attend the meeting—or, at least, write a check—remains important, she added.

“Philanthropy is an invaluable way to serve our valley full of worthy organizations in need of assistance,” she told members. “Your interest in helping them couldn’t be more important. Take the time to do it!”

The Little Black Dress will hold its first meeting using the new format at 5:15 p.m. Monday, June 26, at the Sawtooth Botanical Garden. They will follow that up with a meeting at 5:15 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2, at the garden.

Meetings in 2018 will be held Feb. 5, June 4 and Oct. 1.

The move eliminates the need for billing and bookkeeping involved with collecting membership fees. It also negates the need for local nonprofits to submit requests for funding and make presentations before the members.

The Little Black Dress was founded in 2009 as a social investment club of women who believe they can effect social change through philanthropy.

And it has had an impact. Club members distributed $12,000 to recipients this past fall. The club has given more than $106,000 since it was formed.

Founded by Campion, it’s  led by Trisha Swartling, co-chair and membership chair; Mary Fauth, co-chair and communications chair, and Brooke Bonner, finance chair.
