Surfing the big waves was nothing.
Busting through the waves of sexism was the biggest challenge for female big wave surfers. After all, the first-ever big wave contest for women wasn’t even held until April 2016.
But the surfer women get their due in the documentary, “It Ain’t Pretty.”
The girl power documentary will be screened at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 15, at the Magic Lantern Cinemas in Ketchum as a benefit for Girls on the Run.
The film’s editor and co-writer Jody Banks will introduce the film and conduct a Q&A afterwards.
Tickets are $20 and tax-deductible.
The empowering film recounts the challenges and triumphs of female big wave surfers who fight sexism in the surf industry with the support of a closely-knit community of like-minded women.
Included is a look at Ocean Beach surfer Bianca Valenti’s journey from childhood phenom to world-class big wave charger. The film was shot in the icy waters of Ocean Beach, San Francisco and Mavericks—one of the biggest waves on the planet.
