Cynthia Nims wants to up your game with her Gourmet Game Night.

Nims, a Seattle chef and food writer who wrote a cookbook by the same name, will hold court at the Sun Valley Culinary Institute at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27.

Her cooking class is not the stuff of elk, antelope and other wild game. Rather, she’s bent on showing attendees how to meld game play and food for a fun dinner party with tips and insights for planning a great game night.

She will delve into the artistry of marinating, roasting, mandolin slicing and caramel techniques while she creates recipes for herb marinated shrimp roasted red potatoes with bacon-chive Crème Fraiche and a celery, radish and parsley salad with lemon dressing.

For dessert: A brown butter pound cake with caramel dip.

Come Sunday, Jan. 29, Nims will offer another cooking class at the Culinary Institute.

She will present Homemade Salty Snacks at 1 p.m., which is the subject of another book titled “Salty Snacks.” Expect to learn how to make poppy seed crackers, crisp-fried parsnip and carrot chips, fennel bagna cauda and deviled ham with pickled peppers, among other thing.

Nims, who recently published the cookbook “Shellfish,” has taught at the Sun Valley Culinary Institute before.

CYNTHIA GOES TO THE LIBRARY

In addition to teaching two classes at the Sun Valley Culinary Institute, Cynthia Nims will present a free “Preserving Family Recipes: A Writing Workshop with Cynthia Nims” from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28.

The idea: to keep traditions and memories alive by preserving cherished recipes from family and friends. Nims will talk about how she treasures her mother’s falling-apart recipe folder. And she will share ways to update recipes that might seem a little dated.

Attendees are encouraged to bring along a cherished family recipe or two if they like as there will be time for an informal exercise to capture these recipe stories.
