Learn the science behind avalanches on Saturday when the Idaho Conservation League’s Ketchum office  presents “Snowshoe Tour: Snow Science and Avalanches.”

Josh Johnson, an ICL staff member who has a master’s degree in geology and experience as an interpretive guide, will lead the two-mile snowshoe trek near Galena lodge from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23.

He’ll show how changes in the snowpack can result in destructive avalanches. He’ll dig into snow metamorphism, snowpack weaknesses and avalanche ecology. And he’ll talk about snow influences the water supply.

The hike has minimal elevation gain but will take place at 8,000 feet.

Participants should bring snow boots and warm layers and plenty of water, snacks and sunscreen.  Snowshoe rentals are available at the Elephant’s Perch or Backwoods Mountain Sports in Ketchum.

The hike is free but limited to 10 participants. Call 208-726-7485 to reserve a spot.
