Learn the history and the secrets behind foley and filmmaking when foley artist Lara Dale shows up to make a little noise on Friday.

Dale will present “Darkness into Light: Cinematic Secrets of Foley and Filmmaking” at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, at the Big Wood Cinemas in Hailey.

The talk is being presented in conjunction with The Liberty Theatre Company’s upcoming live staged radio play of “Hammond Castle,” which is being staged as a radio play and, thus, will rely on the tried-and-true craft of sound effects.

Dale’s presentation will examine the foley artist, who puts in all the sound effects that fill in the soundscape of a movie. Today that’s done from digital sound libraries but a small number of people—like Dale—still know how to do it the old-fashioned way with physical props.

Dale will talk about the history of entertainment from silent to radio to talking pictures. And she will conduct a Q&A with “Hammond Castle” sound engineer Scott Steiner afterwards.

The three performances of “Hammond Castle” on Dec. 16 and 17 are sold out. But The Liberty Theatre Company will release it as a radio play on Dec. 21 to newsletter subscribers. Sign up at
